Galápagos Sea Lion

Galápagos Sea Lion

Galápagos Sea Lion Overview

The Galapagos sea lion is a social creature, often considered the welcoming party to the Galapagos island. They are commonly found sunbathing on the various beaches accross the islands. This species species of sea lion breeds exclusively on the Galapagos Islands, where males can be fiercly territorial. Bulls, large males of the species, can hold large territories and mate with multiple females. In order to maintain the territory, they must compete and even fight with other males. If a male is unsuccesful in maintaining a terriroty, they often form bachelor groups apart from the main colonies. The Galapagos sea lion is a agile hunter, with the ability to dive down hundreds of meters and hold their breath up to ten minutes. Thier diet is composed primarily of fish and squid, with mullet the the primary prey.
